Self Reliance
The purpose of the Self-Reliance Program is to empower individuals to provide for the spiritual and temporal needs of themselves and their families. It teaches practical life skills—such as managing finances, finding better jobs, and starting businesses—while pairing these with spiritual growth to foster independence and a greater capacity to serve others.

Self-Reliance - Programs and Resources
Review the many programs and resources the Church provides to improve self-reliance for individuals and families. Topics range from emotional well-being to improving financial stability. Explore many opportunities to further your education, start a business, help others to learn self-reliance, and much more. There are also opportunities to learn English through English Connect, attend college to receive certificates and degrees through BYU Pathway Worldwide, and use the church's Orlando Employment Center to help you find a better job.
Self-Reliance Plan
Self-Reliance Plan: Members use this form on their own or with the assistance of a leader or ministering brother or sister. The form helps members assess their needs, income, and expenses; identify available resources; identify service they can give in return for assistance received; and develop their own plan for becoming more self-reliant.
Self-Reliance Programs
Self-reliance courses are available at both the ward and stake level. Contact a member of the bishopric to learn about upcoming courses or to express interest in a specific topic. Below are a list of topics available:
1. Finding Strength in the Lord
3. Starting and Growing My Business
7. My Foundation for Self-Reliance
Self-Reliance Videos
The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints offers a strong library of video resources to support its self-reliance courses. Here’s a brief summary:
Manuals, videos, and training materials can be downloaded from churchofjesuschrist.org or viewed on the Gospel Library mobile app.
The courses combine spiritual principles with practical skills, and video content supports small group discussions, typically with fewer than 12 participants, available both in person and online — all free of charge. Think of the videos like a coach on the sideline - they set the foundation and direction, while the real growth happens in the group huddle through discussion and accountability.
English Connect
EnglishConnect is a free English-language learning program provided by The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, available to anyone — member or not. Its purpose is to help individuals increase spiritual and temporal self-reliance through developing English skills in an environment of faith, fellowship, and growth.
Think of it like a on-ramp to a highway — it meets people where they are and gets them up to speed so they can merge into greater opportunities in education, employment, and service.
The program features multiple levels: EnglishConnect 1 and 2 are free and designed for beginners, while EnglishConnect 3 is a low-cost intermediate course that prepares learners for BYU-Pathway Worldwide. It also complements other self-reliance courses offered by the Church, such as Find a Better Job, Education for Better Work, and Personal Finances.
